Nerissa

“I think you handled the situation admirably,” Jin said after they returned to Nerissa’s room following the public audience.

His praise did nothing to lift Nerissa’s spirits. She closed her eyes and leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table and cradling her head in her hands. Though she had presented a fierce exterior in the face of Ewdin’s threat, the more she dwelled on their encounter, the less fierce she felt. A dark anxiety was creeping in at the edges of her confidence, its grasping tendrils poisoning every thought they touched. What were the Senka planning that emboldened them enough to walk into Faron Manor and threaten her?

She had believed that taking Chiyo back from Casimer would be the hard part. That succeeding her parents and assuming her rightful place on the throne would be as natural as breathing. Clearly, that wasn’t the case. The truth was, taking back the city had put her in greater danger, and the stakes at hand now were higher than before. She tried to push the disconcerting thoughts away. If she allowed herself to be rattled, she would be giving her enemies exactly what they wanted. And yet, the fears lingered in the back of her mind in a festering black mass.

Not for the first time that day, she wished Rian were here. Even though there wasn’t anything he could do to change the situation, just being near him would have made her feel better. But he also had a duty to attend to, leading the investigation to find the culprits behind the arsons. Right now, that was more important than her feelings.

Raysel’s pacing footsteps stopped. “Nerissa?” he asked, his inquiring tone laden with concern.

She raised her head to find both Raysel and Jin watching her with varying degrees of furrowed brows, and she knew she had let the silence stretch for too long. Taking a deep breath, she tried to pull her jumble of worries into a coherent formation of words.

“I agree that we all dealt with Ewdin’s threat well. What has me unsettled is the fact that the Senka were brazen enough to send someone into our stronghold. Not only do I feel like the safety and security of everyone in the house has been compromised, I am ashamed that I would not have recognized the nefarious motivation behind his words. If it hadn’t been for your tip-off, Jin, I may have believed him to be a sincere representative of the Guild of Merchants.”

Jin poured a glass of water from a nearby carafe and passed it to her. She pressed it to her lips for a grateful sip while he took a seat beside her at the table.

“You were wise enough to intuit the significance of me escorting him in, exactly like I’d hoped you would,” he said. “No one person can be expected to know everything. That is part of the reason why the Ohanzee exist in the first place. We aren’t here merely to protect you physically. After so many years of peace, far more of our work is focused on serving as your informants and advisors.
